Woodlands Family Dental Partners with Angel Tree®

The Woodlands –Friday, December 2, 2011 –

What better way to end your 2011 year by giving back to unprivileged children in the community. Woodlands Family Dental seeks to sponsor children in the area through the non-profit organization Angel Tree®, a program where children of incarcerated parents receive gifts for the holiday season.

Woodlands Family Dental is requesting assistance from their patients and The Woodlands community to help aid in making a child’s Christmas a brighter one as they do not have their parent actively involved in their lives. The office is requesting donations for children between the ages of 2 years old to 16 years. The Angel Tree® organization requests gifts are a minimum of $15 each.

Learning games & Puzzles

Dolls & Actions Figures
Purses & Wallets

Gifts are wrapped and delivered by Woodlands Family Dental team members to the family caring for the children. A personal card from the child’s imprisoned parents is usually attached to the gift. These gifts go a long way to send the important message to the children expressing they are loved and missed by their absent parent during what can be a difficult time of year for them.

The program focuses on transformation in the lives of inmates and on fostering reconciliation between child, incarcerated parent, and family.

Child of incarcerated parents are at a greater risk of turning to a life of crime and are more likely to be neglected, face financial hardships and many drop out of school. The children of prisoners are greatly impacted by the consequences of their parent’s imprisonment and they often grow up feeling abandoned, isolated, and unloved. With your help and donations this season we can bring smiles to their faces and hope in their hearts.

Woodlands Family Dental Gives Back to Local Bridge City Community through Smiles on Wheels Event

The Woodlands – Thursday, September 29, 2011 –

The Woodlands Family Dental team traveled to Bridge City on Saturday, Sept 24 to provide free dental care to impoverished residents of Orange County for the Smiles on Wheels event. The event was hosted by the Smiles Foundation which is a non-profit organization created by the Texas Dental Association.

218 patients were seen in the Bridge City Middle School gymnasium. Smiles on Wheels provided over $140,000 in free dental care.

Smiles on Wheels provides small scale mission work across the State of Texas. The program brings together hundreds of dentists, dental professionals and volunteers

Associate Dr. Colin Lathrop serves as chair for the Smiles Foundation and is the committees youngest member. The committee plans all logistics and determines the target groups that they will be serving one to two years in advance.

Patients are seen on a first come, first serve basis with lines building outside the venue well before the event begins, which is typically 7 a.m. The next event will be held in Brady, Texas on July 28, 2012. Woodlands Family Dental Assist Magnolia Fire Victims by Becoming a Local Donation Drop Off Center

Woodlands Family Dental, the office of Dr. Brett A. Murphey is working with the Montgomery County United Way to assist residents of Magnolia who have lost their homes due to the current wildfire conditions. The office, located at 1400 Research Forest Drive, Suite 120, will become a donation drop off center for The Woodlands community and local residents who want to help.

Woodlands Family Dental Promotes Healthy Smiles and Scares Away Cavities

The Woodlands, TX – Thursday, October 21, 2010 — In an effort to continuously promote healthy smiles, Woodlands Family Dental will be giving out toothbrushes to anyone in the community to hand out for Trick or Treating. Brushes will be available beginning Oct. 25 at their office located at 1400 Research Forest Drive in The Woodlands.

Dr. Brett Murphey offers the following tips that allow children to enjoy Halloween fun, while keeping their teeth healthy and establishing a foundation of a lifetime of oral health, including:

Mix in healthy snacks along with Halloween candy: A balanced diet is one that includes cheese, fruits, vegetables, grains, lean meat, milk and yogurt.
Be the tooth-healthy house on the block: Pass out alternative treats to ghouls and goblins such as cracker snack-packs, trail mix packs, rice crispy treats, etc.
Avoid chewy treats that tend to stick to teeth and cause more damage.
Monitor candy consumption: Only allow Halloween treats in moderation.
Take the fear out of flossing: Teach children flossing techniques for improved oral health at Halloween.
Make tooth brushing fun: Seasonal tooth brushes featuring Halloween themes get children excited about taking care of their tiny teeth.

to announce Dr. Colin Lathrop has joined their practice. A graduate of both Houston
Baptist University and University of Texas Dental Branch in Houston, Dr. Lathrop
graduated both institutions with high honors earning many research and clinical awards.

Dr. Lathrop brings to the Woodlands an extensive background in clinical research from
the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research in Bethesda. The NIH is the
premier biomedical research facility in the world which directs and distributes grants to
research facilities at universities and medical centers across the nation. Dr. Lathrop also
completed research in the department of Head & Neck Surgery, MD Anderson Cancer Center.

Dr. Lathrop also donates his time to dental charity volunteer efforts coordinated by the Texas

to people all over the state of Texas through Texas Mission of Mercy and Smiles on Wheels
events.

Woodlands Family Dental Aid in Annual Mexico Mission Trip

The Woodlands, TX –Friday, February 19, 2010 –

Woodlands Family Dental will be serving the people of Matamoras, Mexico on
a three day dental mission trip in March. They will be reaching out to children,
adults and families who have never had the opportunity to have a proper dental
examination, cleaning or treatment. This is Dr. Brett A. Murphey’s 11th year to
attend this mission trip.

“I’ve been going to Mexico for over 10 years now, overseeing and directing all
dental work in an orphanage. We see 800 to 900 patients in two days. I feel like
dental missions are an area where I can give back professionally. I enjoy being
part of a profession where I can give back to those in need. It’s a really special
trip for us. We’ve been able to see the progress, it’s more than just showing up
and leaving,” says Dr. Murphey.

The mission trip is organized by Dr. T Bob Davis, in Dallas and arranged by local
area missionaries and churches.
